So proud of my husband. ️ He got his first COVID-19 vaccination shot today (Moderna). I know a lot of fellow Christians out there are skeptical of getting the shot, and I certainly believe it is everyone’s individual right to decide whether or not they get a vaccination.
But I do believe that even though the system is flawed, getting a COVID19 vaccine is still the best, most scientifically proven, way to beat this terrible virus and also to protect our neighbors and family members who are at high risk of dying from the coronavirus.
As a white, middle-aged woman with no physical health problems, I have a lower chance of dying from COVID19. I could choose not to get the vaccination, but I’m choosing to get it (and so is John) because we believe in the science of immunization, and we believe in loving our neighbors as ourselves.
The truth is, our brother and sisters who are people of color (Black, Latinx, Indigenous, Pacific Islander, and more) are statistically getting sick and dying at much higher rates from COVID19 then non-Hispanic white folks like myself. If me getting the shot and wearing my mask in public means I save even ONE LIFE, then I have made a difference, in Jesus’ name.
We are called to build the Kingdom “on earth as it is in Heaven” and Christ tells us that the kingdom is a place where “the last will be first.” While our salvation through Christ is individual, we are called to love others, and that means looking outside of ourselves to see, feel, and notice the needs and suffering of other people.
If we are following Jesus Christ, we are called to be selfless and to think about people in the margins who are more vulnerable right now and who are suffering from this disease more then we are. I’m getting the shot.
